A Study on the Correlation between Perceived Family Support and Depression of the Aged

Abstract
This study was to demonstrate correlation between perceived family support and depression of the aged.
The subject for this study was the 111 persons older than 65 years who have lived home in Gwang-Ju city.
These data were collected from July 13th to July 16th 1992.
The instruments used for this study were the Moos family Environment Scale From R and Zung¡¯s Self-rating Depression Scale.
The collected data were analyzed by percentage, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation coefficient using S.P.S.S.
The results of study were as follows :
1. The hypothesis of this study, ¡°The higher the degree of family support perceived by the Aged, the lower the degree of depression.¡± was supported(r=-0.4820, P<0.001).
2. Average value of family support perceived by the aged was 77.73(SD 16.11) in the rage of 23 to 115.
Average value of depression was 42.25(SD 10.39) in the range of 20 to 80.
3. (1) It was found that house pattern(F=5.3279, P=0.0018) and amount of pocket money(F=3.6634, P=0.0289) were statistically significant, in the degree of family support related to characteristics of the aged.
(2) It was found that sex(t=-2.13, P=0.036), degree of education(f=6.5941, P=0.0004), the past occupation(F=3.4862, P=0.0059), health status(F=5.0554, P=0.0009) were Statistically significant, in the degree of depression related to characteristics of the aged.
In conclusion, my research had significant correlation between family support and the degree of depression, and the old persons need family support to reduce depression.
